This document describes how to use the Canvas 5.0.2 Updater to update an installed copy of Canvas 5 for Mac OS. This Updater is distributed in an archive for downloading on the Internet.
The Canvas 5.0.2 Updater is an application that updates an installed Canvas 5 and related application files to Canvas 5.0.2. If you have an earlier release of Canvas 5 installed, Deneba recommends that you update your installed copy to Canvas 5.0.2.
If you do not know which release of Canvas 5 you have installed, launch the program. When Canvas is running, choose "About Canvas" in the Apple menu. This displays the Canvas startup screen. Look under the "CANVAS" logo on this screen. The release number appears after the word "Version."

About the Canvas 5.0.2 Updater
To use the Canvas 5.0.2 Updater, you must have a single-user copy of an earlier version of Canvas 5 installed on your computer. The Canvas 5.0.2 Updater is designed to take your existing Canvas 5 program, and a limited number of related files, and update them to Canvas 5.0.2. After updating, you can begin using the new and improved features of Canvas 5.0.2 immediately.
If you want to keep an earlier version of Canvas 5 installed, you must use the Canvas 5.0.2 Installer, which will be available from Deneba software.
About this Canvas 5 release
Canvas 5.0.2 provides a number of new and improved features, performance enhancements, and increased stability.
Canvas 5.0.2 includes new features for documents, objects, text, and image editing. The on-line Help system is improved. Also, a number of issues are resolved in Canvas 5.0.2.

Using the Canvas 5.0.2 Updater
The Canvas 5.0.2 Updater is available in three versions: 68 K Macintosh (68K), Power Macintosh (PPC), and universal "fat binary" (FAT). Your Canvas application will be updated to a 68K, Power Macintosh, or universal version depending on the updater that you use. For example, if you use the 68K updater, you will install a 68K version of Canvas 5.0.2.
You can use the Canvas 5.0.2 Updater to update an installed single-user copy of Canvas 5. The Updater replaces the existing Canvas application and Canvas Tools folder. It places new file I/O filters in the Extensions folder based on the Updater version you use (the 68K Updater places 68K I/O filters; the Power PC Updater places Power PC-native I/O filters; and the Fat binary Updater places both sets of I/O filters in the Extensions folder). The Updater installs new On-line Help and Tutorial folders. The Updater does not install the Color Inks, Dictionaries, Extras, and Templates folders.
To update to Canvas 5.0.2:
To run the Canvas 5.0.2 Updater, you need at least 30 MB of free hard disk space on the disk drive (or partition) with the Canvas 5 application you're updating. The Updater application uses this disk space only during the update. After you update your Canvas 5 program, the disk space used by the Updater becomes available again.
1. Turn off extensions before using the Updater by restarting your computer and holding down the Shift key. Continue holding down the Shift key until you see "Welcome to Macintosh. Extensions off."
2. Double-click the Canvas Updater icon to launch the updater. A directory dialog box appears.
3. Locate the Canvas 5 folder on your hard disk, and select the Canvas 5 application that you want to update.
4. Click Open. The Canvas Updater dialog box appears.
5. In the Canvas Updater dialog box, click Update to update your copy of Canvas. The Updater alerts you that you should restart your computer after installation is complete. Click Continue when you see this message. A few moments after the updater finishes, a dialog box tells you the installation was successful. Click Restart or Quit to exit the updater.
Notes
• If the selected application has been personalized with your serial number, the Updater transfers your serial number and personal information to the updated version. If the Canvas application you select has not been serialized, a message tells you the update can't proceed because the Canvas program has not been serialized; if this happens, click OK to exit the updater.
• If the selected application is a Canvas 5 beta or evaluation copy, the Updater will update it to version 5.0.2. The installed copy's time limit or feature limits remain in effect.
• If the Canvas application you select doesn't need updating, a message tells you no installation is necessary; if this happens, click Quit to exit the Updater.
• It's a good idea to rebuild your Mac's Desktop after updating Canvas. To rebuild the Desktop, hold down the Command and Option keys while restarting the computer. When the dialog box asks if you want to rebuild the Desktop, click OK.
Viewing Release Notes
After updating to Canvas 5.0.2, you can view the Release Notes topic in the on-line Help system. This topic lists the new features and changes in Canvas 5, some of which are not covered in the printed documentation.
To view the Release Notes topic:
1. With Canvas running, choose "Contents" in the Help [?] menu. Or, double-click the "Canvas Help" file in the On-line Help folder inside the Canvas 5 folder. This launches the Canvas on-line Help system.
2. In the Canvas Help window, click the underlined text, "Release notes," on the Contents page.
Canvas 5.0.2 (Mac OS) resolved issues
The following performance and stability issues have been addressed in Canvas 5.0.2 for Mac OS.
Edit Object Style dialog box
You can no longer accidentally change the object style name when you edit an object style by clicking Edit on the Style tab in the Object Specs palette. Now, in the Edit Object Style dialog box, the Name text can't be changed. This prevents you from inadvertently changing the name of the style, which would create a new style, when you simply wanted to update its settings.
Black and white printing
Canvas 5 now supports 1 bit printing (black and white). This greatly reduces the printing time of black and white images and spooling file size.
Pressure sensitivity
Pressure sensitivity options of paint tools are no longer disabled (dimmed). Note: The eraser feature of some tablets is not supported.
Removed undos
Canvas 5 no longer removes all undos when moving a vector object into a paint object.
Canvas 3.5 file format
Canvas 5 will no longer crash with an out-of-memory error when opening Canvas 3.5 files with pre-Canvas 3.0 text, OLE objects or Windows Meta objects.
Opening tiled Canvas 3.5 documents larger than one printer page no longer causes
Canvas 5 to occasionally freeze.
Canvas 5 now imports EPS objects in 3.5 files correctly. Canvas was importing them as a crossed-out rectangle.
Lines smaller than 1 pt in width that have arrow heads now import correctly into Canvas 5. Canvas was not scaling the arrow heads down to the correct point size.
Tabs and Tab type information are now imported correctly from Canvas 3.5 files.
Bound text now imports from Canvas 3.5 files correctly.
Pantone colors in Canvas 3.5 files no longer convert to CMYK in Canvas 5.
Importing Canvas 3.5 hatches now works correctly.
Gradients from Canvas 3.5 documents no longer appear inverted in Canvas 5.
Printing CMYK images
Canvas will no longer give a PostScript error message when printing colors that are out of the CMYK gamut. The out of gamut color will be replaced with the nearest CMYK equivalent.
Parallel strokes
The pen width of parallel strokes now scales properly.
Desktop pattern
Pasting Apple desktop pattern N6 into Canvas 5 no longer causes Canvas 5 to crash.
Selecting across layers
Canvas 5 no longer crashes if you choose Select All in a multi-layer document while the General Preference "select across visible layers" is active.
Printing to Epson Stylus Color printers
Many printing issues when printing to Epson Stylus Color printers are resolved in this version of Canvas. These issues include printing bound text and rotated text.
Replicate - Offset
Negative values are accepted in the Offset section of the Replicate dialog box.
Editing and creating rendered images
Entering image edit mode and rendering objects no longer offsets the image by one pixel or creates erroneous colored pixels.
Colorization command
The Colorization command is now correctly disabled when objects that can not be colorized (such as text) are selected.
Selecting flowed text
When Select All is chosen while a text object is in edit mode, all text in the object (including text that can not be seen because it flows beyond the text objects borders) is selected and can be formatted. Text that flowed beyond the text objects bounding box was not being selected or affected by text style changes.
Enveloped objects
Canvas now correctly deselects enveloped vector objects after they are edited and another object or tool is selected.
Enveloped objects are now properly identified in the information area of the status bar.
Curve tool
Objects created with the Bezier Curve tool that have effects applied to them now combine correctly with other objects.
Command-clicking a handle of a curve in edit mode now displays the correct pop-up menu items. Not all of the menu items were available.
DXF format
The DXF export filter now, correctly, does not transform circles and lines into polylines when the option to export them as circles and lines is chosen in the DXF Export Options dialog box.
When saving a Canvas 5 document in DXF format:
• Hairline strokes no longer disappear.
• Dashed lines on rectangles and rounded rectangles now retain their dash pattern.
• Rounded rectangles with a parallel stroke no longer distort. (This distortion is also no longer present in CGM files).
GridMaker tool
The line intersections of a grid made by the Grid Maker tool now are formed correctly. The corners were not meeting perfectly.
Dash strokes
Dash strokes in a document now display in the file preview area of the Open directory dialog box.
Vector objects with dash strokes now render correctly. Dash strokes were not showing up in the new rendered image.
Placing Presentation documents
Placing a Canvas Presentation document into an Illustration document no longer causes Canvas 5 to crash or generate an error message.
EPSF format
The EPSF format export filter has been improved in a number of areas, including export of objects with:
• Hairline strokes
• Dash strokes
• Arrowheads
Binding text
Binding text to a rotated arc now works correctly.
Object Specs
The area and perimeter of vector objects with effects applied to them are now calculated correctly.
GIF format
Objects exported to a GIF file no longer have erroneous pixels on the bottom of the image.
Layer import
Canvas 5 now makes a layer visible if it is the only layer in an imported document. This prevents the layer from being unselectable.
Shadow effect
Shadows of vector objects no longer incorrectly have the stroke of the original object.
Extruded objects
When extruding grouped objects Canvas no longer creates an abnormally large bounding box for the extruded object.
Underlined text
Canvas now underlines selected blocks of text containing tabs correctly. Text separated by a tab and underlined was only underlining the text after the tab.
Locked layers
The Hand tool and the Magnifying Glass tool now work on locked layers.
Alignment
Objects now align correctly to the document or page after being aligned to each other.
Macros
Spirals with textures or colors are now displayed correctly in the Gallery palette when made into macros.
Color Dropper tool
The Color Dropper tool now samples colors correctly from the overlapped area of two or more filled vector objects. The color of the vector object behind in the stacking order was being sampled instead of the visible one in front.
Dimensions
The tolerance of a dimension object is now displayed correctly with a plus and minus sign.
Autotracing
Canvas now correctly autotraces rotated images. Canvas used to autotrace an unrotated copy of the image.
PSD file format
Saving a Canvas document as a PSD file and opening it again in Canvas no longer creates a bounding box around the object that is larger than the image.
The Acquire Photoshop command no longer opens an image at 72 ppi only.
Scale command
The Scale command now scales text correctly. Previously it scaled text whether the Scale Text checkbox was on or off.
Edit mode
Menu shortcuts and keyboard commands now work when an object is in edit mode.
Define brush command
The Define Brush command is now disabled (dimmed) when there is no current image selection. This previously caused a crash if chosen when nothing was selected.
Adobe Type Manager 3.9
If you are running Canvas on a 68K Macintosh and use Adobe Type Manager, text bound to a path is no longer invisible.
SimpleText
Canvas 5 now opens and places SimpleText files correctly.
PostScript printing
The PostScript error, "Offending Command: 0,125," usually caused by printing with a French operating system, no longer occurs.
Canvas now prints PostScript correctly when the Numbers control panel is set to use non-US numbering.
File creation date
Canvas now maintains the proper creation date of Canvas files. The creation date was changing after each modification of the file.
Faxing
Faxing from Canvas 5 using various faxing applications no longer causes a crash. This problem occurred with various faxing applications including Global Village Teleport.
MacPlasmap PICTs
Imported PICTs from MacPlasmap place into Canvas 5 with much better quality.
Saving text in PICT format
A Canvas 5 document containing only text and saved as a PICT file no longer causes Canvas to crash.
QuickDraw 3D Metafiles
Canvas 5 now opens and places 3DMFs correctly.
Tile overlap
Canvas no longer rounds the "Tile: Overlap" setting in the Page Setup dialog box to a whole number.
Print preview
Print preview now works correctly when printing a multi-page publication document and selecting a small page range to print. Print preview was not showing the specified page range.
File preview
The preview in the Open directory dialog box is no longer black when opening JPEGs, GIFs, or Canvas files with paint objects while the monitor is set to 8 bit mode.
The file preview is no longer blank when publishing paint images with the Publishing>Create Publisher command in the Edit menu.
Moving selections
Using the keyboard arrow keys to move selected areas of an image, defined with the marquee tool, now works correctly. Large selections were not moving or taking a long time to move.
Moving text
Moving selected text in a text object by dragging it to a new point now works correctly and no longer replaces the original contents of the Clipboard with the selected text. Text was being moved correctly before, but required a screen refresh to be viewed accurately.
Printer driver preferences
Canvas no longer crashes when the current printer driver's preferences file is missing or damaged or when no printer driver is loaded. A printer driver's preferences file is located in the Printing Prefs folder in the Preferences folder in the System Folder.
Placing images
Placing images onto the current layer no longer occasionally disables the ability to select image objects on other layers.
QuickTime conversion
The File format pop-up menu in directory dialog boxes is no longer disabled after canceling a QuickTime conversion.
Canvas is now working correctly with QuickTime under System 7.6.
Layer options
Canvas no longer crashes when a password for a locked layer is incorrectly confirmed.
Enveloped objects
When enveloping a grouped dimension object and vector object, Canvas will no longer generate an error message.
Converting text to paths
Canvas now converts text to paths correctly on 68K machines running Adobe Type Manager.
Dimensions
The current text attributes are now applied to text in dimension objects.
Hatch manager
You can now apply a "no dash" stroke to a line in the hatch manager after giving it a dash pattern.
Canvas settings
Canvas 5 no longer crashes when launched if the Canvas 5 Settings and Canvas 5 Tool Settings files are deleted from the Preferences folder in the System Folder.
Pasting
Pasting Canvas objects with multiple arrows into a Microsoft Word 6 or higher document now works correctly. Only the first arrow was being pasted.
